Friends of Living and Learning Through Loss
Grief is a universal experience, yet its impact on youth is often overlooked, with many young people lacking the tools to cope. In Metro Vancouver, 70% of teenagers have experienced the death of someone close to them, and nearly every student carries some form of loss, whether it's the death of a loved one, family changes, or social inequities. Despite this, schools in BC lack standardized grief education, leaving youth to struggle in silence. Learning Through Loss aims to bridge this gap by delivering Good Grief Workshops to high schools across the region. These 60-90 minute sessions provide grief education and coping strategies through interactive discussions, personal reflection, and activities. Facilitated by trained professionals, the workshops not only help students process their grief but also foster empathy, reduce stigma, and build stronger school communities. By addressing grief early, these workshops support youth in developing resilience, improving mental health, and creating a more inclusive school environment for everyone.
